From the moment the front door opened at David Bromley's gallery - A Day On Earth - in Prahran, you knew you were somewhere special. Following the candles along the staircase to the top floor, guests were greeted with a room filled with beautiful paintings, a long table laden with food and - the best part of all - Melbourne icon Kate Ceberano, performing songs from her new album, Kensal Road. It was all part of radio station smoothfm and Sony Music's A Smooth Night With Kate Ceberano. Among the guests? Molly Meldrum, who likened Kate's beautiful daughter Gypsy (rocking in the corner to all the songs) to a young Kate. Ceberano herself said that a woman of a certain age is expected to produce a series of "Best Of's," but as a singer-songwriter, she was going to try keeping singing and songwriting. Thank goodness. The CD is among her best work, and it felt very privileged to see her sing (and play on drums) alongside her family and close friends, including the likes of Tottie Goldsmith and Ralph Carr.
