West Elm Store Launch

$

For anyone who's lived in the US, they'll know it's a big deal that popular homewares store West Elm is set to have its own Melbourne branch at 464 Chapel St, South Yarra. With a lunch at Cumulus: Up to celebrate, those who deal with the ins and outs of Melbourne's interiors were there to share the spoils: Shareen Joel from Share Design and author Jason Grant, for starters. Toasting her own coup was The Big Group's Chyka Keebaugh, herself with exciting news, having landed a gig as a "houswife" on upcoming reality TV show, The Real Housewives of Melbourne.

But back to West Elm. The store will be in the beautiful heritage building that used to house Politix, and Pennie Rende, General Manager of Williams-Sonoma, was on hand to give a speech - she worked in the US  with the retailer for a decade before moving to Australia for this gig. Speeches, smeeches - that was all well and good, but so was the delicious, Andrew McConnell-cooked East-coast-influenced lunch (West Elm began in Brooklyn), which included house-smoked brisket (served with pickle and rye), clam chowder and New York cheesecake.  Everyone also got a sample of West Elm wares - they specialise in supporting independent designers and products that have a positive effect on the environment - with a Mongolian lamb pillow in their goody bags. Soft.

Ten New York-influenced dishes came out, and I couldn't get enough of this one: House smoked brisket, rye and pickle salad. There was also clam chowder and New York cheesecake. Wow.

When David Jones previewed their Spring-Summer collections in Sydney, there were also a host of people in Melbourne watching the action from a live cross. This is what you need to know: Jessica Gomes rocks - Miranda who? Montana Cox held her own, and all managed to showcase the key trends beautifully: black and white, Parisian flair and cobalt as the colour to watch. Designers such as Camilla, Carla Zampatti, Willow, Dion Lee, Josh Goot, Camilla & Marc make the locals proud, but there's a host of overseas labels too: Givenchy, Alexander Wang, Chloe and Mary Katrantzou, for starters. Let's go shopping, pronto.

Sony Music and smoothfm's A Smooth Night With Kate Ceberano

From the moment the front door opened at David Bromley's gallery - A Day On Earth - in Prahran, you knew you were somewhere special. Following the candles along the staircase to the top floor, guests were greeted with a room filled with beautiful paintings, a long table laden with food and - the best part of all - Melbourne icon Kate Ceberano, performing songs from her new album, Kensal Road. It was all part of radio station smoothfm and Sony Music's A Smooth Night With Kate Ceberano. Among the guests? Molly Meldrum, who likened Kate's beautiful daughter Gypsy (rocking in the corner to all the songs) to a young Kate. Ceberano herself said that a woman of a certain age is expected to produce a series of "Best Of's," but as a singer-songwriter, she was going to try keeping singing and songwriting. Thank goodness. The CD is among her best work, and it felt very privileged to see her sing (and play on drums) alongside her family and close friends, including the likes of Tottie Goldsmith and Ralph Carr.

Myer Spring Summer 2014 Collection Launch

It's all about Jennifer Hawkins, isn't it? It's true, some of Australia's top designers were on display at the Myer Spring Summer 2014 Collection Launch at Fox Studios in Sydney, but it wasn't just the clothes (Toni Maticevski, Leona Edmiston, Manning Cartell, sass & bide, YB J'Aime, Aurelio Costarella and Cozi were among the 200 new looks) that stole the show, even though they did a good job. All eyes were on Jennifer, who shared catwalk credits with models including Julia Nobis and Kris Smith. Oh, one other model tried to steal the limelight: Politix Ambassador Harry Kewell, who made his catwalk debut for Myer. Who got to watch? Guests included Alex Perry, Charlotte Dawson, Lindy Klim, Danielle Spencer, Laura Dundovic and Lauren Phillips. Thanks to Kate & Co., who did the seating for the night - it went off without a hitch.

Lucy Folk Launches Pizza

What does pizza and luscious jewellery have in common? Apparently a lot, since jewellery designer Lucy Folk named her latest range Pizza, and used chef Karen Martini to help her do so. Why Pizza? It's due to the reds, greens and "magic touch of signorina" she uses in the range. The pizza party held in its honor started out at her flagship store in the city, and ended up at Scott Livesey Gallery, where actual slices of the Italian stuff - dressed up in custom Lucy Folk pizza boxes - were consumed by party-goers. Guests included photographer Earl Carter, DJ Laila Saikini and PAM designers Shauna and Mischa - all of whom got to take away some herbs and a jar of homemade tomato sauce. Alas, no jewels in the goody bag.

Millinery & Style

Each year, several milliners are hand-picked for the Millinery & Style event, in conjunction with the BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival. Milliners show ticket-buyers there wares, and some of those lucky present get to win some hats, to boot. Most amusing on the night - among Brett Morley, Jill Humphries and Serena Lindeman - was Peter Jago, who came up with phrases such as "A fascinator is not fascinating...." Also there was bag designer Michaela Menichelli, showcasing her new faux eel-skin clutch collection, just in time for racing season.

Storm Melbourne Opening

Eight years ago, Deborah Caldwell decided to start a fashion label that was halfway between a high street mass label and designer one. "On trend pieces...at prices that you don't have to sell a kidney to afford." The result: Storm, which opened in New Zealand. After ten stores there, Caldwell has decided to "storm" the Australian market, beginning with a Chapel street shop. If the opening party was any indication, it's going to be sunny skies ahead.

Saké Restaurant & Bar's Birthday and Cherry Blossom Festival Launch

There was no doubt that spring had sprung at Saké
Restaurant & Bar's first birthday party, which coincided with their launch of their cherry blossom festival. Guests supped on the delicious morsels prepared by Executive Chef Shaun Presland, while revelling in the first warm evening of Melbourne this season. Everyone had a superb vantage point for people-gazing - the restaurant is set on the river front of Southbank, and overlooks the Yarra and CBD. Of course, after a few classes of Veuve champagne, the view got slightly hazy.

For the month of September, Saké's celebration of cherry blossom festival includes a one hour Japanese Nikka Whiskey masterclass, and cherry blossom-inspired dishes added to the menu this month.

Harry Juku's Launch

Harry Juku's has a wild concept: the Richmond bar and venue space is inspired by the true story of Mitsuyasu Maeno - Japan's only porn star, samurai, kamikaze pilot and political activist all rolled in one. So what happens when you let a bar roll with this theme? Harry Juku is a hodgepodge includes comfy seat-nooks with feet spas, a former sauna room and a bar that serves up hot dogs with wasabi mayo. At the moment, it's only open Thursday nights as a bar; the rest of the time, it can be hired out as a venue space.

Jacqueline Evans Product Launch

A ton of women - and the occasional man - dropped into The Lab Perfumery in North Carlton for Jacqueline Evan's launch of her new products. With a background as a naturopath, Jacqueline was living in the UK when she realised that her knowledge could help her create a specialised, holistic skincare range. The best thing about it? It lacks that crunchy-granola stereotype of some "healthcare" products, and comes in super-sophisticated packaging as well. Everyone oohed and ahhed over the goody bag, too, which included Jacqueline Evans' Rose & Vanilla bath salts, Toms feminine products and a delicious concoction of health food from The Staple Store. I, myself, went dashing to The Staple Store that week for more, and came home from the launch loaded with Jacqueline Evans products I'd bought - thumbs up to the Argan and Rosehip Oil face serum.

David Jones Opening at Malvern Central

For those of us who were very aware of the hole left by Target's absence at Malvern Central shopping centre, there was a big question mark about what the new David Jones would be like. It opened last week - their ambassador Megan Gale gave a speech! - and I'm pleased to report that it's a very dandy store, indeed. In fact, I already purchased a Gregory Ladner clutch for the races, spotted in two seconds flat. It's the first of David Jones' "village format" stores in Victoria, and all I can say is that it's a shopper's paradise, with 350 Australian and international brands available. Megan does very, very well as their brand ambassador, giving a speech with some improv touches, and joking that Lord Mayor Robert Doyle (who also spoke) knew what brand shoes she was wearing just by looking at them. (Although the red soles were a giveaway, for those who know their Louboutins from the Blahniks.

Dolce & Gabbana Australian Boutique Opening

To step into the first Dolce & Gabbana boutique in Australia - in an exquisite gem-box of a building on Collins Street - is to die and go to Sophia Loren heaven, where dresses are made to accentuate femininity, curves and more than a touch of va-va-voom. (I'm sure the men's line is equally appealing, but I was too busy trying to convince the powers-that-be to dress me in a certain floral lacy something for Spring Racing Carnival.) If it wasn't enough to receive a gilt-detailed invitation, and a chauffeured car pick-up, and an exclusive peek into this decadent, luxurious store, the few who were there for this special occasion also got to enjoy a lunch at Neil Perry's Rosetta Ristorante, together with President of Dolce & Gabbana for Asia Pacific, Michel Gonzalez. No wonder so many key fashion folk flew in from Sydney, with InStyle, Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar, among others, all represented. (And, all asked when a boutique would open up in Sydney. The answer: soon, but Melbourne got one first.) I defy any woman not to go ga-ga over their leopard print line.

Brown Brothers' 18 Eighty Nine Wine Dinner

When the "take a chair" invitation turned up from Brown Brothers, guests knew they were in for something special. They weren't disappointed. Held at an inconspicuous warehouse space in Prahran, the room had been dressed with foliage hanging from the ceiling, mismatched chairs around the table and lashings of beautiful shared plates, courtesy of chef Douglas Elder, who works with the Brown Brothers' winery, heading up the award-winning Patricia's Table restaurant.
The reason behind the exquisite dinner? It was to announce the Brown Brothers' 18 Eighty Nine range of wines (each of which have an illustration of a different chair on the bottle), as well as Ross Brown "passing the baton" to his daughters - the fourth generation of Browns. The idea behind "take a chair" is that good things, in the Brown family, have always started with a chair - family gatherings around the kitchen table, where they shared stories and laughter. They tried to replicate the tradition on the night - each of the three Brown sisters stood up to tell a tale, and the evening felt more like an extended gathering of relatives, rather than a formal dinner. Those who weren't there can still feel a part of the celebrations: each wine bottle in the series has a back label which shares a family story about the varietal. Bravo!

Captain Baxter Summer Menu Launch

When Captain Baxter sent a message in a bottle - invitations to a lunch came wrapped, scroll-like, in a glass vessel with cork - plenty of people were on hand to celebrate. Guests who supped on the delicious morsels set against a sea-side view were Brodie Young, model Samantha Downie, Totally Wild’s Natalie Hunter and Kylie Smith, The Block’s Dani Wales and Dan Reilly and Big Brother evictees, Caleb Geppert, Jasmin Bell, Rohan Mirchandaney and Xavier Holland. There to perform was Australia’s Got Talent Semi-Finalist Angel Tairau - guests sat open-mouthed as they listened to her beautiful rendition of a Rihanna song, not believing that she's just 13. (I cornered her in the bathroom to tell her she was going to go far.)

Celebrating their new summer menu, Captain Baxter Executive Chef (Matt Dawson, who's also co-owner, together with Angela Dawson and Tom Doolan) served up scrumptious offerings such as their version of Bo La Lot (beef in betel leaf with sriracha hot sauce) and soft shell tacos with pumpkin, black bean & feta, and jalapenos. No one left hungry. (Pics by Fiona Hamilton.)

West Elm Melbourne Store Launch

West Elm, the US home furnishings  brand, has landed in Melbourne, and what a splash it has made. Not only is it in a gorgeous, two-storey heritage building on Chapel Street, but it's the first stand-alone store to open outside North America. To celebrate, there was a bang-up, kick-up-your-heels party; Craig Nomura, the senior vice president of Williams-Sonoma, did the honors, and MC was Megan Morton, guru of crafting and homewares, who flew in from Sydney. No wonder the crowd included interiors author Jason Grant, The Design Files' Lucy Feagins and newly-minted Real Housewife of Melbourne, Chyka Keebaugh.

Emirates Marquee Launch

Every year, Emirates hosts a marquee that's considered le creme de la creme: the cornerstone of elegance and sophistication within Flemington's famed Birdcage enclosure. And each year, a different theme runs through it, based on destinations of the airline. A party kicked off in a South Melbourne penthouse for this year's winner: Dubai. As suited that locale, the room was opulent and privileged, and an abundance of tasty morsels and delectable cocktails were passed around as guests enjoyed the dancing of Arabic dancer Aya, as well as patting the falcons (really!) on hand. The dazzling guest list suited, too: many of the cast of the upcoming Real Housewives of Melbourne were there (and boy, there sure are a lot of cameras that film those gals), as were Brynne and Geoffrey Edelsten, Melanie Vallejo, Nathan and Tania Buckley, model Samantha Downie and Ann Peacock. With that preview, who can wait until cup carnival?

Mövenpick Launch at QV

Seriously, is there anyone who can say no to an ice cream launch, especially when said ice cream is Swisse's Mövenpick? I thought not, and I wasn't alone: for a bleary Melbourne afternoon, a crowd of people turned up and wouldn't leave. (And it wasn't just the kids who were glued to their seats.)  Now in QV, there's no reason not to go.

The Meatball & Wine Bar's First Birthday

I wrote about The Meatball & Wine Bar in The Age when I told readers how to get a New York experience without leaving Melbourne. Going super-strong after a year, MWB's city venue - CityBalls - in Flinders Lane held their first birthday party, celebrating the fact that they've successfully delivered over 80 types of meatballs (go figure) to customers since they've opened. And if you thought meatballs sounded, well, boring, then consider this: one recent special was a Wagyu beef ball with buttered edamame and wasabi aioli. Who knew meatballs could be that creative? Check it out for yourself.

Vitruvius Clinics' Spring Launch

You don't usually go to the coolest late-night bar to launch spring at a cosmetics clinic, but when that clinic is Vitruvius Clinics, and one of the people behind it is Pawn & Co's Josh Lefers, it makes sense for the two to merge. (Josh is one of the partners at Big Dig Creative, together with Steven Wools. Gaz Kempster, their business partner in Vitruvius, runs that company.) Here's the plan: you go to the clinic for cosmetic enhancement, by way of dermal treatments, microdermabrasion, skin peels or one of the other treatments they offer, and then you shake your much younger looking thang at Pawn a few days later. Winning!

Yellowglen House with Samantha Wills at Turnbull Stakes Day

It was a proper warm-up for the main spring racing carnival days, when Yellowglen House, together with jeweller Samantha Wills, opened their doors for a special VIP party on Turnbull Stakes Day. The dazzling crowd were greeted by a dapper couple in gold and black - Yellowglen reps who will go around Flemington on the main race days, handing out golden keys to some lucky race-goers, who will gain VIP entry. (It's a public marquee but only selected race-goers gain access.)

The position of the marquee is hard to beat: situated right next to the Myer Fashions on the Field marquee, it sits on the lawn alongside the track, with uninterrupted views of the races. (Beat that, birdcage!)  This year and next, Australian jewellery designer Samantha Wills - who is based in New York - has partnered with Yellowglen as Style Director, and so is hosting Yellowglen House. Her fine touch showed everywhere: gorgeous flowers in abundance, bohemian-yet-elegant decor, and coveted jewellery subtly displayed in little corners, highlighting why she is a favourite of celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Katy Perry and Rihanna, among others. (She also collaborated on Yellowglen's sparkling wine, Peacock Lane, together with Yellowglen winemaker Trina Smith.)

Want a ticket? Get in line. And frock up. It's like receiving a Wonka Golden Ticket - but it will be well worth it if you get in.
