L'Oreal's An Evening With Eva - VAMFF

A very exclusive event that was part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival was An Evening With Eva, presented by L'Oreal, where fellow L'Oreal spokeswoman Megan Gale hosted a Q&A with actress Longoria at restaurant Vue De Monde. Here from the US, Longoria kept the crowd entertained, with funny stories. She said that growing up with sisters, she was actually the ugly duckling - while her sisters were blonde, she was dark, and strangers would compliment her mother on her lovely daughters. "Oh, what beautiful girls," they would remark, before turning to Eva and saying, "And who is this....?" Designer Camilla Franks had a long chat with Eva - the only runway show that Eva attended was Camilla's showcase parade, which packed a punch, too.

Highlights of the VAMFF

If you saw a woman tottering about today with bandaids on her heels and a certain fatigued look in her eyes, you'd know she was just another one of the fashion-weary who happily survived one of the best fashion festival weeks in recent history. Here, then, are some of the highlights:

Monty Cox - newly platinum! - and Jess Gomes strutted their stuff on the catwalk for the Opening Event, presented by David Jones.

There was not a person who wasn't wowed by The Grand Showcase Featuring Camilla, where live musicians thrummed a beat to the amazing visuals. Although Georgia May Jagger had to pull out of the show after their family tragedy, Monty (Montana) Cox stepped in, and the crowd were behind Camilla all the way. It was a new Camilla, too: new shapes, with an edgier, more rock 'n roll feel. Loved, loved it.

Designer Camilla (right) takes congrats on the runway.

The Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award, presented by Harper's Bazaar (editor Kellie Hush is pictured) is always a must-attend: not only is the Tiffany setting glorious, but lots of heavyweights in the fashion industry attend. (Editors Hush and InStyle's Kirsten Galliott among them, as well as designers such as Toni Maticevski.) The award has been given to Maticevski, Josh Goot, Dion Lee and Yeojin Bae in the past, so it's considered a very prestigious one. This year's winner(s)? Strateas Carlucci.

Even the finalists were winners: models wearing Pageant at the Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award presentation.

It's always special to step into Christine Barro's store (Christine) in the city, and part of VAMFF's cultural program included The Christine Edit, a curation of fashion collectibles by Adrian Lewis, Christopher Graf, Martin Grant, Maticevski and Nora Kogan. I, meanwhile, tried on everything in the store, including the Dita Von Teese see-through trench that Lydia Schiavello modelled in an earlier episode of The Real Housewives of Melbourne. Couldn't resist. Here, model Sophie Van Den Akker models some of the wares.

At The Christine Edit, I also met the lovely Russian-born Nora Kogan, a jeweller who creates the most interesting pieces - breast and bottom rings among them, as well as a lip bracelet. Here, she shows off her creativity.

Sigh. More Christine wonderment.

Special mention has to go to Shiva Singam, who reprised his role as the always-gracious Door Bitch (I do think that's an official title) at VAMFF's VIP bar.  It was worth trying to get through that velvet rope just to see what magnificent outfit he had conjured up that day. For that reason, I must include two photos!

Got to see what Simply Vera was all about, by Vera Wang...

As usual, the very sight of Docklands drew people in. Here, live mannequins.

I often liked to see what people were wearing. They don't disappoint.

And finally, Government House's closing party. Beautiful night for it.

Two stalwarts of the festival: the inimitable Janice Breen Burns of voxfrock.com.au who still provides fashion folk with the best writing around, and blogger Phoebe Montague, of Lady Melbourne.

Ms Collins Launch

Even before it opened, Ms Collins knew how to create a fanfare, sending invitees a piece of artwork on fabric splattered in neon pink. Guests were told not to be late. Who knew what would await?

Ms Collins, according to the invitation, was a 1960s Parisienne socialite who just happened to have a past as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge, and a fondness for silver hair and spectacles. So goes the story that Roar Projects has created, anyway, with the opening of the new nightspot that formerly housed Silk Road. Launch night saw four famous chefs - Jacques Reymond, Daniel Wilson, Paul Wilson and Ricardo Momesso - show off their talents to enthusiastic patrons, who were also served up a hearty dose of burlesque, dancing and entertainment. And gentlemen, if you've got any down time - unlikely -  between dances, you can head to the Barber Shop (Men + Co), on the ground floor, that's open Thursday-Friday until late. (Monday-Wed until 5pm). They have a motto that single services take no more than 30 minutes: "less time to cut, more time to drink."

Who can possibly resist an invitation when a stellar restaurant invites you to sample their new seasonal menu? No one, it seems, since the house was full at Cecconi's when they invited guests to sample head chef Daniel Kranjcic's new seasonal menu (spectacular), check out their new refurbishment (very swish) and listen to the tunes of songstress Emma Birdsall (lovely). What an enjoyable way to spend a mid-week dinner.

Patternation by Lia T.

The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival always has a kick-ass cultural program, but one of the stand-outs was Patternation, where Lia T, from local Melbourne jewellery label O.T.T., decided to bring together two generations of Australian artists and designers renowned for their fearless use of pattern. Jenny Bannister, Ken Done, Linda Jackson, Reg Mombassa - all these Australian icons were celebrated by emerging artists in a pop-up exhibition. What was on display? An O.T.T. by Lia t-shirt made from cane toad leather, for starters. The opening night party at The Carlton Club was a celebration of dizzying colour: it was hard to know whether to look at the artistry, or the people. The answer: both.

No. 74 Launch Party

It was an invitation for caviar tasting and champagne, surrounded by whispers. The words "Le Louvre" and "No. 74" were uttered. Who wouldn't be curious? And so, an intimate gathering was held at the former Le Louvre site, the iconic Melbourne fashion store that was started by the late Lillian Wightman some 90 years ago, and is now continued by her daughter Georgina Weir in its new South Yarra locale. When Bendigo-raised Lillian began Le Louvre, she had never been overseas, but envisioned what a salon in Paris might look like. So successful was she that not only did she build a highly successful store with international labels, but her store also started a rush on that end of Collins Street - which is why it's now known as Melbourne's "Paris End" of Collins.

But, the copper doors have since closed on Le Louvre, and a new tenant has come and gone. What now? Turns out the party was held by QIC Global Real Estate to open the new No. 74 space. It had been carefully restored as a curated space by Fiona Scanlan and Robert Buckingham, and they did more than nod to its former life, hanging ocelot and animal skins in every corner. Lillian famously was known for her love of the ocelot print - not only did many of her dresses appear in that fabric, but Robert told a story whereby she was once spied in her car - complete with ocelot car seat covers, while she was wearing ocelot print head to toe. As he said, "There was more animal than face."

The idea was to show that QIC's retail space in the future will be aware of its history and culture, and has been carefully conceived. No wonder it attracted so many fashion folk. Christine Barro, from Christine, was there, as were designer Yeojin Bae and someone who was instrumental in the original Le Louvre space - Amelia Coote. Lindy Klim, currently here from Bali, has exciting fashion news: she's currently got a capsule collection with Viktoria + Woods. (Check it out here!)

H&M Melbourne Launch

It had to be one of the most anticipated parties in Melbourne this year. There were rumours of the massive guest list, with a plane being chartered from Sydney to bring in VIPs from there. Local celebrities were lining up, and some couldn't get in, frantically calling upon connections to (unsuccessfully) secure their own invitation. An hour before, that corner in the CBD was a thrum of frenetic activity: lights, red carpet and a mass of photographers elbowing for position. Once inside, no one was leaving: there was food by Adam D'Sylva, cocktails by 1806 and deejays including LA trio Haim. Plus, a 20% discount, which guests took up happily.

Fiorina Jewellery 20th Anniversary

Once I interviewed Martin Lawrence Bullard, the Los Angeles-based interior designer to the stars. While in Melbourne, he stumbled across Fiorina Golotta's opulent jewellery store, Fiorina, and he couldn't get enough of it. "I can't believe we don't have something like this in Los Angeles!" he said, before buying up several things.

After twenty years in business, Fiorina decided to celebrate the milestone with a party. Behind her gilt doors, it was a gathering befitting a European salon: finely dressed men and women, beautiful food and the surrounds of jewels featuring antique coins, charms and semi-precious stones, for starters. Bravo!

Superdry Emporium Melbourne Launch

For the opening of its Melbourne flagship store, Superdry said they wanted the crowd to shop. But who could do that with the thumping deejay music, the excitable party-goers and the happening bash that threatened to go all night (but didn't)? Located at the new Emporium precinct, Superdry is an impressive store, and is another retail offering that's turning Melbourne into an international shopping destination. Luckily for the launch night attendees, their ability to make cool vintage Americana-looking clothes is on par with their ability to mix it up at a party. Just shake and stirrrr.

Smithballs Launch

If you've been to one of the Meatball & Wine Bar's outposts, you'd be ecstatic to learn about the opening of their third venture, Smithballs, smack bang on Smith St, Collingwood. Guests at the launch were treated to memorable food (small trays of charcuterie, paper bags of meat jerky and incredibly more-ish chicken sliders among the offerings) , and the introduction of Italian cocktails on tap, courtesy of the Negroni, created on site. The exposed-brick venue has just enough grunge to feel like it's a West Village dive, and just enough glam (a sign on the wall reads, "I am sorry for what I said when I was hungry," with the word "hungry" lit up in neon) to feel like the latest hipster haunt. There will be a return visit, to be sure.

Who could say no to a cocktail party at the Dolce & Gabbana boutique, where Mr Domenico Dolce himself was in attendance, in his first visit to Australia (and therefore to the only store in Melbourne)? Not editors Kellie Hush (Harper's Bazaar) and Jackie Frank (Marie Claire) who flew in from Sydney. Not a host of Melbourne social faces and Gals/ Guys About Town, all of whom turned into groupies when it came to lining up for a photo with Mr Dolce himself. (He happily complied; he was like Beyonce on the night.) And not Kylie Minogue, who came, socialised, and sweet-talked both Domenico himself, and anyone who approached her for a friendly chat. After all, who could resist that invitation?

Rue & Co.

The invitation came with embossed lettering on stiff cardboard: in the days of e-vites, you knew this was a serious one. But Rue & Co. aren't planning on doing anything by halves. The new "street-style dining destination" (read: pop-up eateries in an outdoors bustling city space) features some of Melbourne's best: Jinny Grants, Kong and St Ali, all underneath the largest street artwork in Australia by RONE, and digital installation by Joel Zika. It was a cold night in Melbourne, but not for long: guests huddled together in a tight group, and the food was beyond spectacular. There were plenty of guests to notice, too: Chyka Keebaugh, Kookai's Danielle Vagner, Mimi and Arthur Galan, Em Rusciano, to name a few.  It's open seven days a week at 80 Collins St.

LUX opening night

The line winding out the front on opening night gave some clue that something exciting was happening within. At LUX, the brand-new nightclub in South Yarra's Chapel Street (in the old Red Bennies space), party-goers got a taste of Las Vegas-meets Melbourne, as the lavish space mixed up elements of burlesque performers, acrobats, a 40 sqm mirrored bar, chandeliers and an upstairs VIP booth. LUX director Skye Graham saw a gap in the Melbourne nightclub offerings, and knew he could do something with the space that spans several levels. Plenty of enthusiasts showed up for the opening, including Real Housewives of Melbourne Andrea Moss and Lydia Schiavello, ex-MKR girls Melina Bagnato and Lee Chan, singer Ross Wilson, Kookai's Danielle Vagner and fitness guru Andi Lew. Luckily, no housewives were involved in the near-nude performances, but plastic surgeon Chris Moss did look twice at some of the dancers to ensure he hadn't met them previously in the surgery.

Paul Louis At Kong

It was a night of new adventures: the introduction of Paul Louis champagne to Melbourne socialites, and a glimpse at Chris Lucas' new Korean bbq eatery, Kong. Guests got a lot of the former (including a take-home bottle of bubbles) but less of the latter, since Kong is still a few weeks away from opening. Still, tasty morsels including kingfish sashimi, Mandu dumplings and clam miso soup left party-goers wanting more. And who wasn't swayed by the Paul Louis representation, a gentleman who offered champagne amidst a haze of soap bubbles as guests arrived? Watch this space.

Nespresso Launch at Emporium Melbourne

You probably guessed that coffee could be super exciting when you watched George Clooney do the Nespresso ads. But the launch of Nespresso's boutique at Emporium proved it, when all the big guns were brought out. Lauren Mac spun tunes for the crowd, Guillaume Brahimi fed the party on delicacies such as smoked salmon cigars with caviar, and duck foie gras parfait with ginger bread, while X Factor winner Dami Im did a special performance. Guests including Bruce and Chyka Keebaugh, Barry Hall, Richard Nylon and Saskia Hampele all got to sample the Nespresso-infused cocktails, with flavours of Salted Caramel, Black Forest and Choc Mint. If that wasn't enough to keep the party buzzing, a trio of tenors dressed as waiters surprised guests by launching into an Italian opera medley.

La Máscara Premiere Tasting

It was an invitation that came with a frisson of anticipation: Jackie and Silverchair's Ben Gillies, recently best known for reality TV's The Real Housewives of Melbourne, held a party for their new cocktail range, La Máscara. Fans of the show have already watched the pair design the bottle's labels and sweat over production issues, but the end result was just fine and dandy, as anyone who tasted it at Morris Jones could attest. There to sample the goods were fellow reality TV veterans Tully Smyth and Tahan Lew (both from Big Brother), and Jackie did a fair amount of shine, shine, shining in a LBD. My pick: the espresso martini. Just don't have it past midnight.

Philip Boon Presents...Jenny Bannister

Just walking into Philip Boon Presents...Jenny Bannister felt like a rush of pleasure, all the senses assaulted (in a good way) at once, particularly that of visual. At the charity fund-raiser for Prahran Mission, Bannister's friend and collaborator, stylist Philip Boon, curated a fashion parade of all of Bannister's iconic designs over the decades. As any student of Australian fashion history knows, Bannister has been both a darling with the avant-garde set and the fashion high priests, having appeared in Vogue magazine almost continuously for years. Her garments were also worn by Kylie Minogue (in a film clip!), Tina Turner, Elle Macpherson, Naomi Campbell, Tina Arena and Claudia Schiffer, to name a few. As her clothes were paraded down the runway - to a crowd that included Julian Burnside, Kate Durham, Teresa Liano, Robert Buckingham and Gwendolynne Burkin, still photos from her archive appeared behind. No wallflower, Bannister got pulled up to dance at the end, but everyone had their disco shoes on when The Chantoozies did a short set at the end. Artworks were auctioned off to further raise money for the Prahran Mission. Wonderful cause, wonderful night.

Larger Than Life Launches Krimper

Krimper might sound like a dance move to the uninitiated, but it's actually a new warehouse space tucked away in the city, that was showcased in all its hot-pink-and-gold glory when Larger than Life launched it as its newest event space. Once the Guildford Art Gallery, it was a jazz bar and is now a cafe by day, events spot at night. Fluro deer heads? Check. Exposed brick walls? Check. But the crowd were wowed by Bright Young Things' delicious menu, Lux Bite's sweet morsels (by Masterchef's Bernard Chu) and decorations which included Damselfly's quirky candles, complete with slogans such as "Unicorns Are Awesome/ I Am Awesome/ Therefore I Am A Unicorn." In the end, everyone realised this: it's a damn fine place for a party.

QV Tropical Retreat Launch

In the middle of winter, it makes sense that you’d dream of getting away to a tropical island where you could sip a freshly squeezed juice amongst the sounds of colourful birds chirping. Mind-blowingly, this will be a reality in the city this winter, with QV Melbourne opening the QV Tropical Retreat, a beach-themed shopping and dining destination. There will also be a range of summer-y events in the pop-up (which lasts until June 27) – tropical terrarium or cocktail classes anyone? Or, just go for the look and feel. Towering palm trees? Check. Tiki-thatched roof? Check. Smell of coconut in the air, as well as a humid temperature? It’s all there. And the opening night party proved it.

Marais Flagship Store Opening

Oh my goodness, the Marais Melbourne flagship store was a much-anticipated party and a half. First of all, all of Melbourne's fashionistas had long-awaited the opening of this women's store, now located on Bourke Street. And everything there was particularly drool-worthy, not least of all the must-have items, such as Celine sunglasses, Lanvin metallic sneakers, Alexander McQueen rings and such luxury labels as Rick Owens (there's a self-contained store in Marais), Balenciaga, McQ, Helmut Lang and more. And the space! The luscious surroundings are unlike anything Melbourne has seen - at night, it was half opulent store, half nightclub, with a ceiling draped in chain mail. Those who couldn't shop comforted themselves with delicious morsels, all toasting the opening of this lavish shopping destination. Heaven in a handbag.
