Urban Kitchen Launch at Emporium Melbourne

$

Since Melbourne folk are already among the world's most enthusiastic foodies, it wasn't hard to gather a pumped-up crowd for the launch of Urban Kitchen, which is the brand new Emporium Melbourne's lower ground food precinct. With food by 1000 wat, Pho Nom, Botica and Tokyo Pop, among others, let's just say that no one left hungry. But I am hungry writing this....

LK Property Group Showcase

Pommery champagne? Check. Eddie McGuire as MC? Check. It was luxury all the way when LK Property Group (and its CEO Larry Kestelman) showcased four of their developments at Peninsula Docklands. Architect Roger Poole of Bates Smart also spoke to the crowd, while guests enjoyed a mix of performance artists and music. Successful? Fifteen properties were purchased on the night, while luxury goods were auctioned off for LK Property Group's charity partner, Kids Under Cover. Still, many were eyeing off the Capitol development in South Yarra - where plans are underway to build a 41-level luxury tower, as part of a $500 million project that will include valet parking and a concierge. Where does one sign up?

Lucy Liu Opens

Another hip Asian eatery in Melbourne, I hear you ask? Make no mistake about it, Lucy Liu Kitchen and Bar stands out from the pack, because it offers a sophisticated, rather than hipster, dining experience. There's no kitsch Asian decorations here: instead, the stylish space  - created by March Studio - was inspired by Executive Chef and CEO Michael Lambie's recent trip to Shanghai, where bamboo scaffolding seen in Hong Kong, for instance, was re-interpreted in Lucy Liu's ceiling.

Apparently the restaurant's namesake has nothing to do with the Charlie's Angels actress, but rather tries to capture the spirit of an eatery which showcases the best Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisines. At the launch night, everyone was raving - including designers Jacob Luppino and Anthony Pittorino from J'Aton, seated at my table. Don't leave without trying the cocktail list, to, including a Coconut Mojito. But make sure you book: although walk-ins are available, the place has enough buzz to make getting in a bit tricky.

Talk about a photography exhibition with buzz. Marnie Haddad's latest exhibition, The Fourth Floor, opened with a splash at Scott Livesey Galleries, where friends and fans who've known her for years came to celebrate her latest success. Having started out studying at UCLA in Los Angeles, Marnie returned to Australia to work as a well-regarded fashion photographer. Not only has she had 15 years in the business, but RMIT also established 'The Marnie Haddad Mentor Award' where a graduate student is given the opportunity to working on sets with clients.

In The Fourth Floor, her  young subjects stand solemnly in opulent rooms, reflective in their lush surrounds. It's easy to see these photographs standing the test of time, and Marnie's work becoming even more collectible as years go on.

When an invitation comes from Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Nick Riewoldt, Nathan Brown and Matthew Richardson, you just have to take it. Such was the case for the introduction of the new-look Hotel Brighton, which is now an expansive, cool, nook-filled gastropub, after a massive refurbishment. Its owners - which include the aforementioned four - were all there for lift-off. Check it out as the new destination hot spot.

Seamstress VIP Membership Launch Night

Seamstress has always been an uber-hip destination: a somewhat hidden hot spot that's housed in a century-old former textile factory (as well as a one-time Buddhist monastery). Now that it's launched its new season menu and cocktail list, it also held a VIP membership night, by inviting some top seamstresses - that would be fashion industry personalities - to attend.

Veuve Clicquot Winter Party at Emerson

When Veuve Clicquot held their winter party at Emerson, it had the most eye-boggling decorations. A Veuve chairlift? Skis? Snowboards? Puffer jackets? If they had set up shop, the crowd would have left in a sea of yellow. As it was, they had to be content with merely sipping from the yellow goblets, and hope they would win the skis/ snowboards up for grabs.

Emporium Melbourne Opening, With Baz Luhrmann

It was, as one can imagine, an exhilarating melange of sight and sound, but what else was to be expected if director and visionary Baz Luhrmann was going to open the brand-new Emporium Melbourne shopping destination? Everywhere you looked, there was some spectacle to be taken in: waiters pouring champagne while atop rollerskates, sirens singing on piano tops, feathered girls in shop windows, 1920s brides dancing in wine barrels, acrobats suspended over a giant Australian open tennis ball, gold confetti falling all night from the shopping centre sky, celebrities with mouth agog as much as everyone else.

QV Hideaway Spring Lunch

Every now and then, the Melbourne social calendar offers up an event so exquisite and perfectly presented, you wish you could live in that little event-bubble for a little longer. Such was the case with the spring salon show held at QV Hideaway, a gorgeous pop-up venue in the QV that blends the outdoors with an event space, using a different theme each year. This year's is a gorgeous treehouse that has come to life, and the space has been used throughout Melbourne Spring Fashion Week for various open-to-the-public events. For this lunch, however, media were treated to a lunch by chef Nicolas Poelaert, whose dishes all looked like the forest had come to life, in the most beautiful, imaginative, Heston Blumenthal-meets-Martha Stewart way. There was also a spring salon show, where guests got to view clothes from the QV boutiques, including a Jason Grech dress that had come to bloom courtesy of flowers by Flower Temple. Memorable!

Foodies and wine aficionados alike were on hand at ACCA to celebrate renowned chef Jacques Reymond's collaboration with Dish'd - an exciting venture which entails incredible food you can order off the internet, that arrives frozen, and you re-heat at home. Sounds like it couldn't be good, right? Au contraire, mon frere: the food was delectable, and stand-outs include prawn cigars, a delicious four cheese pasta, thai prawn red curry, mozzarella and pesto pizza and toffee apples. Transfer it to your own dishes, claim it as your own at your next dinner party. There will be raves, I promise.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Wrap-Up

Boy, did I love that Melbourne Spring Fashion Week that just closed last week. I'm not saying that because I was one of the few who got invited to the shows, sitting in front row at the majestic town hall, or alongside an intimate group of media and celebrities in the Hub, among other venues. I just loved it all: the town hall shows, which were a true mix of fashion and theatre. (At Runway 3, designers including Akira, Megan Park and Yeojin Bae displayed their garments while women of varying cultures and instrument prowess provided the backdrop.) I really discovered new ways to wear fashion, as happened at the Hub's Nike Sports Luxe show, where Nike tech products were paired with sports luxe designers - gosh, I wanted that Michael Lo Sordo pink trench. Then there were also the curated events - I saw sparkly Belluccio frocks at Eve nightclub, and Project: StageLabel's mix of up-and-coming designers at Mon Bijou. And don't get me started on the emerging designers and their way-out concoctions. All in all, MSFW offered colour, pizzazz and not a little excitement about spring shopping. Ladies (and gents), get out your wallets...

The Eternal Headonist

Anyone who lives in Melbourne at this time of year knows how hat-crazy it can get. Thank goodness, then, for the launch of The Eternal Headonist, an online store that has a carefully curated selection of beyond-fabulous hats. Need a hat that looks like a feathered mohawk? Check. Want a Marilyn Monroe print trilby by Philip Treacy? It's there, too.

It's the brainchild of Annabel Allen, who was working in corporate jobs - she's a chartered accountant - when she realised she wanted to do something more creative. This was one way to combine her love of millinery with her business skills - "and I realised that there was no outlet for a lot of the milliners here to sell and promote their work...there are few outlets who sell fashion forward, modern, contemporary headwear." In an ideal world, Allen would have fashion folk don a hat to a party on any day of the week - not just during spring carnival - and to encourage this line of thinking, she plans to throw several parties with headgear as part of the dress code. For the launch - with a speech by milliner Richard Nylon - at Anna Pappas Gallery, quite a few got into the swing of things. And here's the best bit: online, the designer range starts at $150. Shop at The Eternal Headonist here.

Emirates Marquee Launch

Here's the scoop: I was a teeny weeny bit concerned when Emirates announced that Germany would be the theme of this year's Emirates marque at the 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Carnival. After all, how would they decorate? Would it be an elaborate beergarden? Would there be lederhosen? So far, I'd come to expect the Emirates' marquees to be luxurious, surprising, unique superstructures with sophisticated detail and more than one supermodel in the corner. Would this year be different?

Here's the deal: this year might be the best of all. It's not just Germany that's the theme - it's old and new Germany, and to launch it all, Emirates threw a part at SmartArtz Gallery. It was like being in underground Berlin, with a modern, urban feel, street art on the walls and yes - lederhosen-clad dancers - who soon turned into unexpected hip hop movers. Fabulous. The crowd got a sneak peek at Mark Schaller's customised artwork - still a work in progress - while Patrick Studios Dance Group did their thing. There was also a taste of the German food on offer, including Kartofellpuffer (you don't have to pronounce it, you just have to eat it) and apple strudel. Ja, bitte.

Nickelodeon's Slimefest 2014

So, this is what I learned at this year's Nickelodeon Slimefest (I was there last year too, you guys). Cody Simpson is very, very big with the young ladies. I had personally met a girl who had zig-zagged her way around Melbourne hotels on the previous day in an attempt to grab a selfie with Cody. (She was unsuccessful.) So to those teenagers reading this post, the abundance of Cody photos are there for you. That aside, Slimefest is an absolutely awesome concert for its prime ticket-holders (6500 kids and their families), who seemed to be upwards of about seven years old, but it's just as incredible if you're an adult, given how many successful acts perform. (Apart from Cody and his sister Alli, there was Dami Im, Justice Crew, Sabrina Carpenter, The Collective and Savage.) Plus there's slime. Even Lady Gaga doesn't have that.

Victoria Racing Club and Yellowglen's Millinery Workshop with Kerrie Stanley

It's always lovely to receive an invitation for something hat-related in the lead-up to the Spring Racing Carnival. But how about the opportunity to make one's own hat, surrounded by fresh flowers and under the guidance of a top milliner? That's just what happened when Victoria Racing Club and Yellowglen sent out invites for an exclusive millinery workshop, hosted by Myer milliner Kerrie Stanley, held at QV's Flower Temple. It's true that none of us will probably end up wearing our designs, but no matter - it was a great way to celebrate the season.

Launch of Bar Schweppes

When it was slightly tricky to find the entrance of Le Bon Ton, you knew you were in the right place: at the back of the atmospheric bar, the launch of Bar Schweppes for the Melbourne Cup Carnival was held. The theme? The American Deep South, so expect Louisiana creole, a Bourbon Street vibe and a whole lot of bigger-than-Texas attitude. They'll also serve up cocktails from the best bartenders in town - think Black Pearl, Le Bon Ton and Seamstress. (Too true: I singled out each of these bars in a recent article on Melbourne's best!) Dishes will hail from Bluebonnet Barbecue, Le Bon Ton, Meat Mother and Meatmaiden, and will include pulled pork and slow cooked brisket. Plus, Texas chilli for those who like their food hot. Expect that everyone will be dancing to DJ Andy Murphy's beats. Who can wait?

I'm always a big fan of Turnbull Stakes Day, not least of all because it feels like the Racing Carnival is finally here, and because Yellowglen does such an amazing job of having a VIP marquee that's actually open to public race-goers from Derby Day through to Stakes Day. At Yellowglen Terrace, styled by jewellery designer Samatha Wills together with paper artist Marine Coutroutslos, This year, guests including ambassador Emma Clapham got to sip drinking including one of the Yellowglen Colours on their garden-themed terrace, with a perfect view of the track. What more could you want? I also adore the fact that Yellowglen are accessorising the marquee to match their colours according to the different race days, asking race-goers to dress according. Cup - yellow. Oaks - pink. Stakes - red. Easy.  (Photos courtesy of Lucas Dawson)

Launch of MPavilion

The weather held out - just - for the launch of MPavilion earlier this week, where gusts of wind started blowing just as the voices of the Dhungala children's Choir, led by Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham, began. The architecturally gorgeous structure, currently (and temporarily) in Queen Victoria Gardens, has been the brainchild of businesswoman Naomi Milgrom, and has been inspired by London's Serpentine Gallery, whose co-director Julian Peyton-Jones flew in for the launch. Also making their mark were the staff members dressed in white and gold dresses by Alpha60 - a very hip touch, indeed. Get set for a series of events as part of the MPavilion's public program, that include talks, dance performances and music.

Thurley Spring Racing Collection Preview

There wasn't a lady-who-brunches who was going to miss out on Thurley designer Helen O'Connor's Spring Racing Collection preview, which included morning niblets and a spot of champagne, not to mention a miniature horse named Eskimo and models-in-Thurley prompting everyone to reach for their wallets when they saw how stunning the new Prism collection was. (True story: I was one.) Turns out no one is sick of dressing up for the racing season yet, since everyone was out in full dress splendor, including Lindy Klim, in black, and Rozalia Russian, in head-to-toe white. It might have been a small battle of the reality TV stars, too, as lurking in the shadows were Laurina Fleure (the superhero of The Bachelor season), Andrea Moss (ex-Real Housewives of Melbourne), Tully Smyth (Big Brother) and Samantha Downie (ex-Australia's Next Top Model), to name a few. Who had time to chat? We were all too busy eyeing off the gorgeous clothes. (Photos by Anthony Licuria)

iHeart Travel Launch

When iHeart Travel held a party in Port Melbourne, there was one thing on everyone's minds - not just this new way of travelling, designed for single men and women of all ages, but what was happening with The Bachelor contestants, since Sam Frost made her first post-breakup appearance at the event. (My favourite photo is when Sam is standing with her fellow contestants, Chantal and Zoe, who are smiling normally for the camera. In the next shot, bring in the guys, and everyone's beaming!)

In fact, the girls got so swamped by the crowd - celebrities wanted to meet them! - that they ended up taking some time out in a roped-off area at the back. Meanwhile, we all learned about iHeart Travel, which takes internet dating to the next level - on holidays, be they luxury resort takeovers or cruises. Whether Sam is going to take one is anybody's guess.
